Avoid a tight squeeze: don't overtake turning trucks

28 August 2013

The second part of the Australian Trucking Association’s animated Safety Truck video series has now been released.

The video reminds road users not to overtake turning heavy vehicles, as the length of the vehicle means it is legally allowed to cross lanes to navigate a corner.

The video also reminds motorists to stay back from heavy vehicles when using roundabouts, as a car travelling close alongside can be cut off as the turning truck legally uses both lanes.

The Chief Executive of the ATA, Stuart St Clair, said that while ‘do not overtake turning vehicle’ signs are well known, not all motorists understand why this is the case.

“Australian drivers just aren’t taught how to share the road safely with heavy vehicles, which can lead to a number of dangerous situations,” Mr St Clair said.

“While we’re all responsible for making our roads a safer place, motorists can find helpful advice on how to avoid preventable accidents like these in the ATA’s Truckies Top Tips and these videos,” Mr St Clair said.

The full video series will be available online as the videos are released, as well as on display in the Safety Truck.

The final video of the series will be released next week.
