The Australian Transport Safety Bureau’s safety investigations must be extended to include heavy vehicle crashes.
In a joint submission to the Joint Select Committee Inquiry into Road Safety, the Australian Trucking Association and the National Road Transport Association have called for no-blame, independent road safety investigations. The ATA and NatRoad support Vision Zero and have raised key priorities that should be fast tracked by the Australian Parliament, including:
- amending the National Land Transport Act 2014 to include safety as a focus, and
- requiring all infrastructure funding projects to apply the Austroads rest area guidelines to the planning, design and delivery of road infrastructure
The submission also calls for the enhanced post-crash care in remote areas, and increased education for road users about how to share the road safely with trucks.
